Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 30, 2026

This policy explains what String collects, why, who we share it with, and what you can do about it. It applies to the String mobile app and stringdatingapp.com.

Questions: support@stringdatingapp.com

1. Who we are

2. What we collect

Information you give us

Account and identity

  • Mobile phone number (used to create and sign in to your account)
  • First name
  • Date of birth or age
  • Gender, and the genders you want to be shown

Profile

  • Photos
  • Short written answers, interests, values, and date preferences
  • Your price comfort level for dates

Location

  • Your approximate coordinates, which you provide when you set up your account. We use these to show you people who are actually near you and to suggest venues between you and a match.

Emergency contact (see Section 6 — this is a third party's information)

  • The name and phone number of a person you choose as your safety contact

Activity in the app

  • Who you like, pass on, and match with
  • Messages you send to your matches
  • Date plans you make, and which venues you choose
  • Your answers to our post-date survey, including whether a date happened
  • Reports you file and users you block

Information collected automatically

  • A push notification token, if you allow notifications
  • Basic device and app information used for crash reporting and diagnostics
  • Usage events (screens opened, features used) used to understand whether the product works

We do not collect your contacts, your camera roll, your precise location in the background, or any biometric data.

3. Why we collect it

What Why
Phone number To create your account, sign you in, and secure it
Name, age, gender, photos To build the profile other users see
Location To show you nearby people and suggest venues between you and a match
Interests, values, date preferences To decide who to show you
Messages To let you talk to your matches
Date plans and survey answers To improve who we show you, and to measure whether the app works
Emergency contact To alert someone you chose, if you start a safety check-in and do not confirm you are safe
Reports and blocks To keep the app safe and to review accounts
Push token To notify you about matches, messages, and safety reminders

4. Text messages (SMS)

String sends SMS in two situations.

Sign-in codes. When you sign in, we send a one-time passcode to the phone number you provide.

Safety alerts. If you start a check-in timer before a date and do not confirm you are safe before it expires, we send a text message to the emergency contact you chose.

Message frequency. Sign-in codes are sent only when you request one. Safety alerts are sent only when a check-in timer you started expires without confirmation. Neither is recurring, and String does not send marketing or promotional text messages.

Message and data rates may apply.

We do not sell, rent, or share mobile phone numbers with third parties for marketing purposes. Phone numbers are shared only with the service providers listed in Section 7 who deliver messages on our behalf, and only for that purpose.

To stop receiving safety alerts, remove your emergency contact in the app's safety settings. You may also reply STOP to any message from us. Replying STOP will prevent us from sending you further messages, including safety alerts.

5. Who we share information with

We do not sell your personal information.

We share information with the following service providers, only as needed for them to do their job:

Provider What they receive Why
Supabase Account and profile data Database and authentication
Twilio Phone numbers, message content Sign-in codes and safety alerts
Amazon Web Services Photos Storage and automated photo moderation
Expo Push tokens Push notifications
Stripe Payment details you enter Event ticket purchases
Anthropic Message context, when you use AI-assisted features Conversation suggestions
Google Venue searches Venue information
Mapbox Approximate coordinates Maps shown in the app
PostHog Usage events Product analytics
Sentry Crash and error data Diagnostics
Render All server-side data Application hosting

We may also disclose information if required by law, or where we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to prevent serious harm.

Other users see your profile: your first name, age, photos, and the written parts of your profile. They see your approximate distance from them, never your coordinates or address.

6. Your emergency contact — someone else's information

When you add an emergency contact, you give us the name and phone number of a person who is not a String user and has not agreed to anything with us.

We take that seriously. Specifically:

  • We store only the name and number you enter. We do not look them up, enrich the record, or contact them for any other reason.
  • We message them only if a check-in timer you started expires without your confirmation.
  • The message tells them your first name, that a check-in you set has expired, and asks them to check on you. It may include a link showing your last shared location.
  • We never use their number for marketing, and we never share it with anyone except the provider that delivers the message.
  • You can remove them at any time in the app's safety settings, which deletes their information.

Please tell the person you have listed them. They will not otherwise know until they receive a message.

7. How long we keep things

  • Account data: while your account exists.
  • Precise location history: deleted 30 days after it is created.
  • Messages and matches: while your account exists, or until the match ends.
  • Emergency contact: until you remove it or delete your account.
  • Reports and safety records: retained after account deletion where necessary to keep other users safe. See Section 9.

8. Your choices

  • See your data: contact support@stringdatingapp.com and we will provide what we hold about you.
  • Correct it: most of it is editable in the app; for the rest, contact us.
  • Delete your account: available in the app under Profile → Delete Account. This is permanent.
  • Turn off notifications: in your device settings or the app.
  • Remove your emergency contact: in the app's safety settings.
  • Location: you can change the location you gave us in the app.

If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the CCPA, including the right to know what we collect, to request deletion, and not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights. We do not sell personal information as that term is defined by the CCPA.

9. What survives account deletion

Deleting your account removes your profile, photos, messages, matches, and emergency contact.

Two things do not go away:

Safety reports filed about you by other people. These are the other person's account of their own experience, and we keep them so that a record of a safety concern cannot be erased by the person it concerns.

A record that an account was banned. If your account was banned for a safety reason, we retain a one-way cryptographic hash of the phone number so that the ban cannot be trivially undone by deleting and re-registering. This hash cannot be reversed to recover your number by ordinary means, but we want to be clear that it is derived from it. We retain it only for accounts banned for safety reasons.

If you believe either applies to you in error, contact support@stringdatingapp.com.

10. Security

We use encryption in transit, store credentials with a managed authentication provider, and restrict internal access to production data. No system is perfectly secure, and we will not claim otherwise.

11. Age

String is for people 18 and older. We ask for your date of birth at signup and do not knowingly allow anyone under 18 to use the app. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we delete it.

12. Changes

If we change this policy in a way that materially affects you, we will tell you in the app before the change takes effect.
